Celebrating 7 Years of Impactful Health Changes Across Nigeria

Today, at the National Learning and Transition Event held at the Ladi Kwali Conference Centre, Abuja Continental Hotel, Breakthrough ACTION officially transitioned thier efforts and results to government agencies and community organizations. Under the leadership of Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and funded by USAID, the Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria project has been instrumental in driving positive health changes since its inception.

The event featured a red-carpet arrival, a gallery walk showcasing their innovative interventions, a special guest plenary address, and a panel conversation with national and state representatives about the future of social and behavior change within Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Strategy.

With an investment of over $100 million dollars, Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria has been the largest social and behavior change program ever funded by USAID/Nigeria. Working closely with federal and state Ministries of Health and local organizations in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory, they have made significant strides in areas such as maternal and child health, nutrition, malaria prevention, and more.

The multifaceted approach, including mass media, community outreach, and user-driven social media campaigns, has inspired long-lasting change in health behaviors. From reproductive health to malaria prevention, their efforts have led to tangible improvements in health indices across the country.

Notably, findings revealed that community engagement significantly increased the adoption of preventive behaviors among women, including ante-natal visits, facility-based deliveries, exclusive breastfeeding, and preventive malaria medication.

As we look to the future, Breakthrough ACTION commitment remains unwavering, they will continue working collaboratively with government agencies, local partners, and communities to sustain the positive behavior changes achieved over the past seven years.

Thanks to the support of USAID and PMI, Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria have had the privilege of improving the health and well-being of millions of Nigerians. Together, they’ve saved and improved countless lives, ensuring pregnant mothers receive essential care, families sleep under mosquito nets, and children with tuberculosis receive treatment.
