The Truth About Menstruation No One Wants to Talk About – But We Must!
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappShare on LinkedinShare via Email

Menstruation is a natural biological process, yet for millions worldwide, it is still surrounded by stigma, shame, and discrimination. The conversation around periods has long been dominated by silence, misinformation, and cultural taboos, making it difficult for menstruators to access proper healthcare, education, and dignity.

But the question remains: How can we collectively support one another and break this cycle of stigma?

Understanding Dignified Menstruation

Dignified Menstruation goes beyond access to menstrual products—it’s about respect, equality, and freedom from discrimination. It means ensuring that people who menstruate can experience their cycles without fear, shame, or social exclusion. True dignity in menstruation includes:

✔ Access to proper menstrual hygiene products and facilities
✔ Eliminating period shaming in communities, schools, and workplaces
✔ Involving men and boys in the conversation
✔ Policies that support menstrual health in public and private spaces
✔ Challenging harmful cultural taboos and myths

Ways to Support & End the Stigma

1. Normalize the Conversation

One of the most effective ways to break the stigma is to talk about menstruation openly. Parents, educators, media, and workplaces must foster open discussions that frame menstruation as a normal part of life, not something shameful.

✔ Encourage open conversations at home, schools, and offices
✔ Use correct terminology like “menstruation” instead of euphemisms
✔ Share real stories and experiences to normalize the discussion

2. Promote Menstrual Education

Lack of knowledge fuels stigma and discrimination. Comprehensive menstrual education should be provided in schools, workplaces, and communities.

✔ Teach both boys and girls about menstrual health to promote understanding
✔ Ensure that education goes beyond just biology—include discussions on rights, dignity, and social perceptions
✔ Encourage workplaces to provide awareness programs and create menstrual-friendly policies

3. Advocate for Policy Changes

Governments and institutions must ensure menstrual dignity laws that support menstruators at all levels. This includes:

✔ Access to free or affordable menstrual products
✔ Menstrual leave policies in workplaces
✔ Clean and accessible toilets in public places
✔ Integration of menstrual health education into school curriculums

4. Challenge Cultural Stigmas & Myths

Menstrual stigma is deeply rooted in cultural beliefs and practices. To break this cycle, we must question and challenge harmful traditions that isolate menstruators.

✔ Speak out against discriminatory practices, like menstrual huts and restrictions
✔ Support media, movies, and campaigns that highlight menstrual dignity
✔ Empower community leaders to advocate for inclusive cultural change

5. Men & Boys as Allies

Menstruation is not just a “women’s issue”—it’s a societal issue. When men and boys are educated about menstruation, they can help break the stigma, support menstruators, and advocate for change.

✔ Encourage fathers, brothers, and male colleagues to engage in the conversation
✔ Train teachers and employers to create supportive environments
✔ Challenge male-driven stigmas and stereotypes through education and media

6. Support Grassroots & Activist Movements

Activists, NGOs, and survivor-led movements are at the forefront of menstrual justice. Supporting their work amplifies the cause and drives policy reform.

✔ Donate to organizations providing menstrual products and education
✔ Volunteer in local menstrual health initiatives
✔ Use social media to spread awareness and uplift the voices of activists

What should you do?

Dignified menstruation is about more than just hygiene—it’s about human rights, equality, and respect. By standing together, advocating for inclusive policies, and breaking the silence, we can ensure that no one feels ashamed or excluded because of their period.

Let’s commit to ending period stigma and supporting one another in the fight for dignified menstruation.
